RIDING THROUGH . PITCH & DEVELOPMENT

creative direction . editing

Riding Through is a new motorcycle adventure travel show. In each episode hosts Liv and Hayley ride through a new country, sharing their journey and connecting with women who ride.

The Ask . Create a pitch sizzle for a docu-series in development about two women who independently travel the world on motorcycles and experience life in unfamiliar places.

The Challenge . The sizzle needed to sell both the show’s adventure and its hosts. Many times mood and intention is set in a pitch sizzle by using found footage of complimentary (story or aesthetic) films and TV shows. This allows for leeway in dream casting in people and environment. However, in this we had to have Liv and Hayley on screen. The only footage we had of them together was on a guided and relatively safe and populated tour through Pakistan. Though grateful to have the footage, it was not exactly the story we were selling. How could this footage be manipulated and repurposed to portray what the future show wants to be?

The Process . I took on the role of both Director and Editor on this, so the process was multi-faceted. I had to break down the footage six or seven times for the best dialogue bites of content and clips for visual aesthetic. This included the best clips of the hosts on their motorcycles where they appeared to be alone and not on a guided path. We also identified where we could upcut the footage to give off a feeling of danger. Crafting a narrative that starts in the excitement of the unknown, moves into the danger of the show’s potential—and finishes on inspiration.
